PWA: an SEO friendly application?

19 octobre 2020

In the mobile-first era, PWA is gradually taking over and attracting more and more people. Does this web application optimized for smartphones promote SEO?

Natural referencing

Natural referencing or SEO (Search Engine Optimization) defines the methods used to optimize a website and increase its visibility on search engines.

Being well referenced means that your website appears among the first results of a web search made by a user.

The display of search results depends on two elements.

  • Indexing is the fact that robots gather the information contained in the website and save it in a database.
  • The algorithms which then use this information, and through a specific calculation, return the sites in order of relevance to the search carried out.

The objective is then, by playing on the different levers favoring SEO (content, site structure, metadata, etc.) to try to stand out as high as possible in searches on the browser.

SEO is in fact the main channel for acquiring visitors to a website. To find out more, we invite you to read our previous article.

Google favorise le mobile first

In recent years, searches on search engines have increasingly been done on mobile, which is becoming the main channel for accessing the internet.

Following this movement, Google now favors mobile websites when it comes to SEO. This new turning point is also a continuation of the launch of a new technology by Google: AMP. Accelerate Mobile Page (AMP) consists of improving the loading time of pages on smartphones.

Today, everything seems to be focused on constantly improving the user experience of mobile versions of websites.

PWA: an SEO friendly application?

A Progressive Web App is a website that works in the same way as a classic application. This implies a very important element: the PWA is an application referenced on search engines.

Indeed, its content is directly accessible by indexing robots, which offers them significant visibility. On the contrary, a classic mobile application is not natively perceptible by these robots, and remains behind on search engines.

However, to maximize the natural referencing of a PWA, it must be designed and developed like a website and not like an application. It is necessary to take into account the different elements that can promote SEO:

  • Every page must be indexable
  • Utilisation de vraies URL
  • Well configured HTML structure
  • Maximisation de l’UX
  • Proposal of qualitative content
  • Use of keywords and links

The PWA being optimized for mobiles, it will naturally be highlighted by Google. In addition, this new type of application offers advantages in the direction of better visibility, such as the significant improvement of the user experience, the security of the application via HTTPS, or the increase in the speed of loading pages.
